Ready, Set, School!

Through Adult Education classes, we support our Members to develop key functional skills they need to reach their highest level of independence. The classes, a collaboration with the Culver City Adult School, provide individualized instruction in math, reading and writing, and functional academic topics including money/shopping skills, writing checks, balancing checkbooks, reading calendars, telling time, and how to read maps. Members set personal educational goals each year.

School in session on a recent Tuesday. Classes are taught by Margie, a teacher with the Culver City Adult School, and supported by several loyal volunteers. They run two days a week.

We sat down with few Members to ask what they are learning in school and what they most enjoy about it.

Gloria

What are you proud of that you learned last year?

How to count halves. I use it in my life, like counting chips so I only eat half the bag.

What are you learning now?

Right now we are learning percentages. Like 50% of $12 equals $6.

What do you want to learn this year?

That’s a very good question. I want to learn how to cook. Good foods to keep my body healthy. I want to learn how to eat more healthy

What’s your favorite thing about school?

My favorite thing about school is writing because we write different topics. We write different topics each day and it’s very fun. Today we wrote about the Winter Olympics. The volunteer asked us what we would like to do if we were in the Winter Games. I said ice skating.

I write the sports for school for Tuesdays and Fridays.

I read about it in the newspaper and share with the class.

Today I shared about football. This Sunday is the Super Bowl so I shared which teams are going to play. The Eagles and the Patriots.
