Introducing “Tutu Tuesday”!

L.A. GOAL Board Members celebrating Tutu Tueday

L.A. GOAL Board Members celebrating Tutu Tuesday

Why are our Board Members in tutus, you might ask? To celebrate Tutu Tuesday, of course! L.A. GOAL staff started Tutu Tuesday in March as a way to honor and remember beloved L.A. GOAL Member, Maria, who passed away in January. Maria loved all things frilly and fit for a princess. Each month, we pick a Tuesday to wear tutus around the office to remind us of what Maria taught us. We asked a few staff to share what Maria taught them:

  • “Maria taught me nobody is ever to far away to be reached.”
  • “Maria taught me patience.”
  • “Maria taught me pink goes with everything!”
  • “Maria taught me to be silly!”
  • “Maria taught me it’s always a good moment to stop and spend time with people you love.”
  • “Maria taught me that I was always her favorite!”

Congratulations to Our New President…of the L.A. GOAL Members’ Board, that is!

Newly elected L.A. GOAL Members’ Board President, Robert S.

At L.A. GOAL, we believe Members should have a say in everything we do, from the programs we offer, to the social activities we plan. Among the responsibilities of the Members’ Board are: to lead Members’ meetings, evaluate L.A. GOAL programs, report to the L.A. GOAL Board of Directors, plan social activities, and lead fundraising efforts to cover the cost of those activities.

At January’s Member meeting, attendees voted for this year’s Member Officers. Among the highlights: long-time L.A. GOAL Member Robert S. was elected President and Matthew S. and Mary C. were elected as co-Sargents of Arms, marking the first time they’ve held Board positions! This year, our TADAA Summer Volunteer program hosted 32 high school and college students, who provided over 1,000 volunteer hours to L.A. GOAL in our art studio, custodial program, and adult education program.

We are so proud of the TADAA program and the work it does to educate young members of our community about the abilities of people with developmental disabilities!

As the summer came to a close, we asked several volunteers to share about their experiences. Read their beautiful words below. Continue Reading →

Doug and Nina copy

L.A. GOAL Member Doug H. recently sat down with our very-much-loved adult education volunteer, Nina Warner, to ask her about her best L.A. GOAL memories, what’s most unique about L.A. GOAL, and what keeps her coming back week after week.

We shared a shortened version of this interview in our 2016 Newsletter (in print). We are excited, thanks to the virtues of the internet, to be able to share the full interview here!

Doug: What have you learned since coming to L.A. GOAL?

Nina: I’ve been here since 2012…someone told me if you want to come in and smile and have friendly conversations with people, nice people, then this is the place to be. I wanted to help as much as I could. I knew everyone would be teaching and learning at different levels. I learned everyone is at their own speed and we apply our knowledge as necessary. Whether its math or English or accounting skills, everyone is working at their own pace

…When you mirror back to Members and show them what you are hearing, that’s part of what I can help them with. I can help them understand what they know and what they don’t know. A lot of us get isolated and not a lot is asked of us until we get asked a specific question. I don’t try to challenge people too hard, but I try to raise the bar.
